Oven Baked Pretzels Recipe

The word pretzel is being taken from a German word “Brezel” which means any product made from bread and shaped like knot. This knot shaped pretzels make them unique in looks and its recipe makes it easier for them to be baked and a yummy thing for both adults and kids. The most common seasoning for pretzels is salt which makes its taste even yummier. Original pretzels are deep in color just like burnished skin and somewhat yeasty. The other seasoning of pretzels may include nuts, glazes, chocolate and sugar. The shape of pretzels is now used for pastries and other sweets too.

Preparation and Cooking Time

Preparation time: 2 hours

Cooking time: 10 to 15 minutes

Total Time: 2 hours 20 minute (approx.)


  1. Active dry yeast = 4 teaspoons

  2. Kosher salt = one-fourth cup

  3. Hot water = 4 cups

  4. Baking soda = half cup

  5. Vegetable oil = 1 tablespoon

  6. White sugar = 1 teaspoon

  7. All-purpose flour = 5 cups

  8. Hot water (110 degrees) = one and one-fourth cup

  9. Other seasoning = sugar, chocolates, seeds, glazes and nuts


  1. First of all take a small bowl and dissolve yeast in it then add one and one-fourth cup of warm water then add 1 teaspoon sugar and leave approximately for 10 to 15 minutes until this whole solution becomes creamy or thick.

  2. Now preheat the oven to 450 degrees and grease almost 2 baking sheets. The oven should be preheated for at least half an hour before baking.

  3. Take another bowl large in size and add half cup sugar, salt and all-purpose flour, mix them well after they have been mixed add the yeast mixture that you have made before and again mix all ingredients well, so that they form dough.

  4. Start kneading the dough until it becomes smooth, if the mixture seems dry to you add 1 or 2 tablespoons of water. Knead it for about 7 to 8 minutes. Now place this dough in a slightly oiled bowl, cover it up and let the dough rise. This will take about 1 hour.

  5. Meanwhile dissolve the baking soda in 4 cups of hot water in another bowl. After 1 hour when the dough becomes double in size take the dough out on a floured surface and neatly cut it into 12 pieces. Roll each piece into a rope and then twist it in pretzel shape.

  6. When all the pieces are being shaped dip each one in the baking soda solution and place them on baking sheet sprinkle them with kosher salt at the end and bake them in preheated oven for about 8 to 10 minutes.

  7. You can also use other seasonings such as nuts, seeds, glazes, chocolates and sugar according to your own taste.
